The Garage Theatre Mission Statement

The Garage Theatre was founded in the belief that independent non-commercial theatre is vital to the future of the art form.  The Garage Theatre is a collaborative ensemble that strives to create a diverse body of work, take artistic risks, and uncover social and human truths.  We are committed to reaching a new theatre audience by producing affordable works in a unique voice.

The Garage Theatre’s 11 ½ Beats

We uphold the idea that theatre is the most communal of art forms. We hope to continually surprise the audience by making them feel more than they expect.
We are committed to producing the overlooked and forgotten works of contemporary playwrights.
We will aggressively seek out original works.
The Garage Theatre is interested in cultivating a new generation of theatergoers.
We will contribute to education through the arts with activities including (but not limited to) workshops, round table discussions, and children’s productions.
We believe theatre is much like Voltron, it is strongest when all the parts come together as one.
We all agree on Rocky Road ice cream.
We will broaden the limits of the theatrical experience by incorporating artists outside the medium.
We will not stop until…

Our History
1996 -   The World Premiere of "EGG MAN" opened to a sold out audience of 12 people in a small garage in Costa Mesa.  The response was so overwhelming that the show was extended for an encore performance the next night.  Once again the show sold out to the same 12 people.

1997-1999 - We talked about doing another show.

2000 - After graduating from Cal State Long Beach The Garage Theatre was officially formed.

2001 - The Garage Theatre produced three shows in the city of Long Beach at various locations.  This included a collaboration with ARK (Artists Reaching Kids) which provided us an opportunity to produce a show for the children of the community.

2002 - The Garage Theatre produced its first show in an actual theatre, running in repertory with the loud*R*mouth theatre company. The production garnered three OC WEEKLY Theatre Award nominations:  Best Production, Best Ensemble, and Best Director.

2003 - Earlier this year The Garage Theatre collaborated with Rude Guerilla Theatre in Santa Ana and raised $1,186 for www.moveon.org with our participation in The Lysistrata Project.

2005 - THE GARAGE THEATRE FINDS A HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (finally)

2006 - The Garage Theatre is nominated for three NAACP Theatre Awards for our production of Dutchman by Amiri Baraka - Best Set, Best Lighting, & Best Sound
